ABOUT
Our Story
A writer-led story studio built on a bridge.
OUR STORY
It started with a sentence.
Blunt Pencil Storyworks was founded by Afe Olumowe — a writer, script analyst, and bridge-builder between African dramatic craft and North American production markets.
Afe Olumowe is a Nigerian-Canadian writer and script analyst with deep roots in both African dramatic tradition and North American screenwriting craft. He founded Blunt Pencil Storyworks to address a gap he saw firsthand: extraordinary African stories struggling to find the development support they needed to reach global screens.
Based between Toronto and Lagos, Afe brings a unique dual perspective to every project — understanding both the cultural specificity of African narratives and the production realities of North American markets. His approach is rigorous, voice-protecting, and relentlessly focused on getting stories to the point where they can attract production capital.
Under his leadership, Blunt Pencil Storyworks has developed three active production titles, incubated over fifteen writers through the Story Lab, and built development partnerships with Canadian and international production companies.

THE BRIDGE
Toronto to Lagos. And back.
We operate across two continents because the stories we develop live in both worlds. Our writers come from Lagos, Nairobi, Accra, Kingston, and beyond. Our production partners are in Toronto, Los Angeles, London, and streaming platforms everywhere.
This is not a migration story. This is a bridge — and bridges run both ways.
WHAT WE DO
Developing stories that travel.
We develop feature films, television series, and limited series with strong dramatic foundations. We specialize in African stories with international potential — narratives grounded in specific cultural realities that resonate universally.
We do not import Western templates onto Global South or Indigenous stories. We identify the dramatic engine already present in your cultural material, then strengthen it for international production standards. We do not make your story Western. We make your story inevitable.

WHAT WE BELIEVE
The principles that guide us.
Rigorous Craft
We do not perform surface-level polish. We diagnose structural problems and engineer solutions.
Voice Protection
Cultural specificity is not a bug to fix — it is a feature to amplify. We never flatten a story to make it travel better. We tune the engine so it carries its cargo further.
Two-Way Bridge
The bridge between Toronto and Lagos runs both ways. We bring African stories to global markets and bring global production expertise to African narratives.
Development Partners, Not Gatekeepers
We do not take back-end participation. Our fees are engagement fees, not success fees. This keeps our analysis honest and our recommendations clean.
